Many of the city's buildings are constructed in the classical European style and the whole city is a designated World Heritage Site. Antiguans have roots from varied backgrounds including indigenous Mayan heritage as well as European ancestry. They decided to preserve and cherish the atmosphere of colonial times. To this day, the construction of modern buildings and the use of flashy signage is prohibited.
