“Crystals” have become a mass phenomenon: jade for more courage, amethyst for better concentration, rose quartz for love and against wrinkles. What international stars and influencers exemplify has long since arrived as a beauty product in drugstores. But what is expected to be beauty and spirituality in Europe is less glamorous in Madagascar, one of the mining countries. Here the rose quartz is taken out of the ground with bare hands under the most difficult conditions. 80 percent of Malagasy jewelry and gemstones are mined by hand rather than by machines. The reporters Nadja Mitzkat and Zita Zengerling went on a search: From Tiktok and Insta, to the mines in Madagascar and back to a German politician.
