Sofya discovers that Foma is missing and tries to organize a search for him. Time passes, Foma is in mortal danger, and his attempt to get out only aggravates the situation. Sofya suspects that Goryzhnikov is behind the abduction. He, of course, denies everything, but hints that he could help in the search if the artistic director of the theater writes a letter of resignation of his own free will.
