Challenger develops a new way to power a balloon but on its maiden voyage, the balloon is caught in a violent storm. When the balloon emerges from the clouds, the explorers discover that they are no longer on the plateau - but beneath it. The balloon has descended into a hostile volcanic landscape where escape hinges on Challenger's ability to repair the balloon, and on Malone's new friendship with a beautiful warrior.
