The series is set in the fictional island of Sodor, located in the Irish Sea. Sodor is depicted as located in Cumbria, near the historical town of Barrow-in-Furness Thomas the Tank Engine is an anthropomorphic steam locomotive, with a design loosely based on the LB&SCR E2 class (1913-1963). Thomas and his associates work at the North Western Railway, the main standard gauge rail network of Sodor. The series focuses on their work relationship.

    A Scarf for PercyPercy wants a scarf to keep warm. He gets his wish when a prank backfires and a pair of the Fat Controller's trousers become tangled around his funnel.

    Percy's PromisePercy tells Thomas he'll take his trainload of the vicar's Sunday schoolers home for him, but has to do so in a fierce storm that makes him blind to where he's going and too cold and wet to run.

    Time for TroubleThe Fat Controller feels that Gordon is being worked too hard and so decides to give him a rest and let James take his place for a while: This makes James feel proud and boastful. However, his bragging soon fades when he has an unexpected run in with Toby, who has run out of water on the Main Line.

    Gordon and the Famous VisitorEveryone is excited at the arrival of the celebrity engine, 'City Of Truro' - all except Gordon, who sniffs at the fact that C.O.T. is a "domeless engine". However, when trying to break C.O.T.'s world record, he receives total humiliation thanks to a teasing wind.

    Donald's DuckAs a reward for his hard work, Duck is given his own branch line; he starts boasting endlessly about it and Donald teases his that he quacks "as if he laid an egg!" So Duck's driver and fireman decide to play a trick on Donald - with "quacking" results!

    Thomas Gets BumpedAfter helping some children out of a sticky predicament, Thomas gets behind his timetable and is very late. Then things go from bad to worse when his Branch Line gets damaged by hot weather and has to be closed whilst it is being repaired. Bertie the Bus offers to takes Thomas's passengers while he shunts in the yard; and this makes the little engine worry that his passengers will forget about him.

    Thomas, Percy and the DragonPercy teases Thomas about the time that he got scared in "Ghost Train". But one afternoon, Percy gets stuck in a siding after a points failure and has to spend the night there, where he encounters a terrifying dragon! But will anyone believe him?

    Diesel Does it AgainPercy and Duck have too much work at the harbor, so help is called in. But it turns out to be Duck's old enemy, Diesel. They're forced to give him a chance, but have to decide whether to speak up when he acts roughly and causes trouble, resulting in his second expulsion.

    Henry's ForestHenry loves visiting the forest he, Toby, Terrence, and Trevor helped plant years before. But he is saddened when a storm destroys some of it, and neither Toby nor anybody else can figure out how to cheer him up.

    The Trouble with MudGordon is smothered in mud, but refuses to be cleaned. So the Fat Controller, as punishment for disobeying orders, orders him to pull trucks, whilst James looks after the Express. But in the end, after Gordon helps James, he learns that "Having a wash down is essential to every engine."

    No Joke for JamesJames annoys the others with his boasting so to prove himself to Gordon, he tells him he'll be doing more important work. His trick gets him to take coaches and Gordon stuck with freight-trucks - and in trouble and shame for it.
  • Thomas, Percy and the Post Train

    Thomas, Percy and the Post TrainThomas and Percy pull the Post Train most nights. When the trains start to run late though, the future of the Post Train is put in jeopardy as the Post Office decide to start using Harold instead. Luckily a special passenger - and some strong winds - save the day.

    Trust ThomasGordon convinces James to pretend being sick so he won't have to shunt. Thomas is forced to deal with the cruel trucks, while trying to keep his promise to get tar delivered so Bertie's road can run more smoothly.

    MavisMavis is a young diesel engine who is starting work at the quarry. Unfortunately her way of shunting is a lot different from Toby's and he gets annoyed. A bit of false encouragement from Diesel gets Mavis into trouble.
  • Toby's Tightrope

    Toby's TightropeMavis is told that she is not allowed anywhere near Toby's line, so when the trains get bigger she develops a plan for the trucks to push her there. But Toby accidentally takes those trucks and they decide to push him instead. As Toby speeds down the line, he realises that the bridge ahead is collapsing and he knows that he can't stop in time!
  • Edward, Trevor and the Really Useful Party

    Edward, Trevor and the Really Useful PartyThe Vicar is having a garden party so that he can raise money for a seaside trip for the children. Trevor is the star attraction, but Edward wishes he had something to do to help out too. In the end he helps the vicar with the posters advertising the party. Meanwhile, Bertie is teasing Trevor about being old, but Trevor has the last laugh when Bertie gets into a sticky situation.
  • Buzz, Buzz

    Buzz, BuzzJames is chatting to Trevor about some bees who Trevor is looking after. Boco warns them to not to annoy the bees, which annoys James. The next day, some bees escape from the station and cling onto James's warm boiler... and refuse to let go!
  • All at Sea

    All at SeaDuck wishes he could sail to far away lands but Percy tells Duck he'd rather stay on his dry rails. So, when Duck helps Harold out in an emergency situation, he decides that Percy is right and that he would be much happier on his own rails.
  • One Good Turn

    One Good TurnBill and Ben are sent to the big yard by the Fat Controller to help the other engines with important goods. They work well but when it comes to going onto a turntable for the first time, things get out of hand.
  • Tender Engines

    Tender EnginesGordon wishes he had extra tenders, especially when the others warn him against taking too many resources for himself and Diesel acts better than steam engines. Henry wishes so too, so Duck fools him into getting what he thinks he wants.
  • Escape

    EscapeWhen Edward points out to Douglas that Trevor was spared from becoming scrap-metal and that help is needed, Douglas, who narrowly escaped the fate himself, is inspired that night to rescue Oliver, a stranded steam-engine, from diesels.
  • Oliver Owns Up

    Oliver Owns UpOliver gets high praise from the other engines and becomes too proud to listen to Duck's warning about being careful with trucks when he's asked to handle them for his next job. He pays dearly for it.

    BulgyOliver and Duck are angry when a rude bus who hates engines, "Bulgy", and a friend trick their passengers into going with him instead by falsely claiming they can go quicker, but Duck follows him to see him getting himself into trouble.

    HeroesBill and Ben mistrust a group of trucks into telling them how to set up things at the harbor station so get in trouble for the mix-up. When a rock-slide suddenly strikes the quarry, they're worried they'll be blamed for it, too.

    Percy, James and the Fruitful DayJames is rude and doesn't care that Percy's freight-trucks are the reason he's late, so Percy is smug when James' brakes stick and he has to help. Trying to hurry himself to show off, he gets into an embarrassing accident with the cargo.
