South Tyrol is the meeting point of two worlds: The cool and dry climate of the north mixes with Mediterranean warmth and humidity. Fertile lowlands with Italian flair go hand in hand with snow-covered high alpine peaks. The collision of the African and Eurasian continental plates prepared the ground for this charming contrast: it formed mountains from different types of rock - the limestone of the Dolomites and the crystalline of the main Alpine ridge. The interplay of these unique conditions gave rise to a large number of fascinating habitats with a high diversity of species.
