Sex Scenes Are Awkward and Dangerous — Intimacy Directors Are Trying To Fix That

The theater world is finally catching up to society’s # metoo cultural reckoning, by employing full-time intimacy directors. Intimacy directors are like stunt directors, for simulated sex scenes.

This year, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival– a regional repertory theatre in Ashland, Oregon — announced that it hired its first resident Intimacy Director, in a move that acknowledges this position as an essential, salaried position.

VICE News profiles OSF’s Intimacy Director, to see what her role entails. We also speak with the original creator of the intimacy directing method, Tonia Sina, who created the method to fill a massive and immediate void in theater production.
