- After 15 Years on YouTube, THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THINGE1
After 15 Years on YouTube, THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THINGIn which John makes a VERY BIG* ANNOUNCEMENT about nerdfighteria's long-term project to support Partners in Health as they work to radically reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. * Like, VERY big. - For Our 2000th Video: Just a Normal Snowy DayE2
For Our 2000th Video: Just a Normal Snowy DayWhat I would very much like to do at some point is to make a video that is like "All of the best moments of the last 15 years" and I thought I might even take that challenge on until I realized that my son was going to be staying home from school the last two days of the week. BUT I REALLY WANT TO DO IT SOON!! To all of the nitpickers...yes, we have uploaded more than 2000 videos on this channel...especially if you count all of the various parts of Truth or Fail. But this is the first time the counter has ever hit 2000...that's for certain. Thank you all for being a part of the things we have done. - Thank God We Got This Right...E4
Thank God We Got This Right...The only drawback to having 13 months is that, whatever day of the week you're born on, that's the one you're stuck with. At least, now, everyone gets a weekend every once in a while. With 13 months in a year, Monday babies would always be Monday babies. But, this is the thing, there are no decisions that impact a lot of people that don't have some negative impacts. I can't express how much better it would be to always know what day of the week the 19th would be!! Just...think of how much extra certainty that would add to our lives! Maybe that's a bit of a drawback too though..I dunno. I do love the idea of that six day week though...I bet people would get up to all kinds of nonsense. - The Most Dangerous Thing We've Ever Done on StageE8
The Most Dangerous Thing We've Ever Done on StageNow that I'm thinking about this, I can't stop thinking about it. I remembered it because a friend of mine told me a story about when she was once at a hot spring and she went from pool to pool asking everyone if they'd like to participate in 30 seconds of silence and she got everyone on board, but then, 15 seconds after they started, some guy said "THIS IS BORING." - How John and I Talk About IdeasE10
How John and I Talk About IdeasI hope it's clear in this video that the thing that makes our ideas good is both the energy and the constraints of this community. There has never been a better guide than the values of Nerdfighteria, and when I look at the list of things that we have made together, or helped inspire in the world, I gotta say...holy crud...wow. Very good stuff. - Knowing is not Understanding - Pluto and the P4AE12
Knowing is not Understanding - Pluto and the P4AThis is one of the strangest Vlogbrothers videos I have ever made...to me, it feels entirely natural and flows very well, but I am worried about what it will feel like to others, to make a video that is this aware of itself!! - The 2022 P4A Meme Review!!!E19
The 2022 P4A Meme Review!!!I hope the people who make these things understand how important they are to the overall feel of the Project for Awesome. Without stuff like this, it would be like 50% as fun. These moments are special, but they are so much more special by the people who build upon them. Thank you all so much for an amazing P4A!! - What Caused the War? Ukraine and Russia in Historical ContextE21
What Caused the War? Ukraine and Russia in Historical ContextOriginal Title: Understanding Ukraine, Russia, and the War in Historical Context In which John explores historical and political context to understand what caused the Russian government's invasion of Ukraine, and how we arrived at this horrific now. - How to Fix Daylight Saving TimeE22
How to Fix Daylight Saving TimeThe more I think about this, the more interested I am in how it is a lens on a bunch of broader phenomenon. Right now, there are a bunch of pieces being published about how particular groups are upset or worried about sticking with daylight time all year round rather than standard time. But, if we were going to be sticking with standard time all year round, there would also be a bunch of articles about why that's bad. We only talk about the drawbacks of the things we are doing, which means we don't spend a lot of time thinking about the drawbacks of the alternatives. Tricky business... Anyway, the only way we fix this is if enough people don't care...so that's where I'm at. - US College Students Need HelpE24
US College Students Need HelpIt's a mess out there and the Crash Course team is constantly thinking about it. I'm so happy that we're going to keep trying to fix this thing...lowering barriers wherever we can. It's a real privilege to get to work on these things and we take it super seriously. Thank you so much to everyone who's ever helped out Crash Course through the Coin or Patreon or watching and sharing. We have so much more work to do, but I'm really so pleased for this launch...it's a lot of work coming together. - Celebrities I've Met and Whether I'd Vote for Them???E27
Celebrities I've Met and Whether I'd Vote for Them???The oldest of old school vlogbrothers videos: In which John is placed into a pickle by Hank, and has to figure his way out with limited supplies. Topics discussed include fame, whether I would vote for Laura Dern to be the President of the United States, and so on. - Are You Stuck in The Sad GapE30
Are You Stuck in The Sad GapI haven't run across a video that was so hard to fit into four minutes in a long time. There is a lot I want to say about this, and also a lot that I'm not 100% clear on. I don't know to what extent this is an artifact of the structure of people communicating and to what extent it is an artifact of the way the social internet is built. - An Amazing Day - Greetings from the Turtles All the Way Down Movie Set!E33
An Amazing Day - Greetings from the Turtles All the Way Down Movie Set!In which John sees a 3-d printing of his imagination on the first day of the turtles all the way down movie shoot. This video is both emotionally and physically all over the place! Sorry about that, but it has been an all-over-the-place kind of day. - My Religion and My Banned BooksE35
My Religion and My Banned BooksIn which John discusses his work as a chaplain, his religion, his books, and why he writes books that endeavor to stand there. As is usually the case with videos where I even obliquely attempt to talk about faith, I feel very unsettled about this one (hence all the textual asides), as my relationship with religious institutions (even progressive ones) is increasingly ~complicated~. But I wanted to try to express that the people trying to restrict access to information and human rights do not speak for me or for all Christians. - What Elon Musk Got Wrong About TwitterE38
What Elon Musk Got Wrong About TwitterIt's hard to overstate how different "We will moderate based on what is illegal" is from "...illegal or destructive to the world, or wrong, or bad." That second sentence is just saying "moderation will remain centralized and subjective...but I will be in control of it." I understand that he was just answering questions during an event, but it does show that this just isn't something he's thought very critically about. It seems likely that, when given just a few more examples of how truly difficult it is to balance open speech with creating a sustainable platform that people do not flee, Elon will back out of this deal. There are lots of reasons for him to back out of the deal as well, including the fact that, if he doesn't he becomes the bogeyman. He has a tremendously strong brand, but even his personal brand would take a beating in such a controversial role. - What Everyone's Getting Wrong About Student LoansE44
What Everyone's Getting Wrong About Student LoansThe group with, on average, the worst outcomes...who are most likely to default and least likely to receive benefit from their educations are, for some reason, never a part of this conversation and I think it's very odd. Much love to all of the people in this situation, I know there are many watching, and I really hope we can do better by you and others who are in similar situations. - 7 Movie Reviews in Four MinutesE50
7 Movie Reviews in Four MinutesI don't not watch movies because I don't watch stuff, I just consume so much stuff generated by YouTubers and podcasters and authors other independent creators that I don't ever really think about movies. I think this is also why movies make me cry so much...they're just a much more effective medium for conveying emotion. Character+story+people's actual faces+music+cinematography can sometimes just SLAM into me and totally break me down. So it's actually unusual for me to get through a movie without crying. I often can't get through a PREVIEW! Especially when it's family stuff. - Director Hannah Marks Is Nervous To Meet YouE51
Director Hannah Marks Is Nervous To Meet YouIn which John chats with Turtles All the Way Down movie director Hannah Marks about dogs, thought spirals, car colors, and more. It is very hard to get 15 minutes of a director's time on a movie set, so HUGE THANKS to Hannah for doing this. - Sad COVID Boy Hank Green Eats Foods He Hates but Can't TasteE52
Sad COVID Boy Hank Green Eats Foods He Hates but Can't TasteSo I have COVID and it sucks a lot but I figured I'd try some of my least favorite foods before I (hopefully very soon) regain my ability to smell. Turned out fantastic, honestly. 10 out of 10, would do all of this again (except the anchovies.) - Nauseous Puddle WaterE53
Nauseous Puddle WaterIn which John discusses King Charles II's war against coffee, his three main problems with coffee, and how OUR BIG NEW PROJECT the awesome coffee club seeks to address those problems by sourcing great beans directly from farmers and donating 100% of profits to improve child and maternal healthcare in poor communities. - What are These Boys Doing??E56
What are These Boys Doing??Today I was reminded that my video about the James Webb Space Telescope from 2011 turned out to be a big deal internally for people working on JWST. It had undergone a lot of setbacks and not hitting budgets and there were a number of people who were starting to feel that maybe it would never happen, or wasn't worth the costs. - How Climate Change /Actually/ Works...in 4 MinutesE58
How Climate Change /Actually/ Works...in 4 MinutesI totally get and agree with the instinct to simplify by saying "It's like a greenhouse" or "a heat-trapping blanket" but, like, what's actually going on? It's not that complicated! More energy is coming in than is going out because of WIGGLES. And yes, I'm talking about this because it feels like maybe MAYBE the US will have a climate bill that will actually, measurably reduce emissions on a fairly tight time scale which is massive. - The Biggest Climate Deal in History Almost Didn't HappenE63
The Biggest Climate Deal in History Almost Didn't HappenThe thing about this bill is that it's going to keep having a huge impact on the country for many many years and, mostly, we will not even notice. That's what happens with almost all good legislation. Of course, there will also be some bits of this that won't work as intended and they'll probably be big news stories. When you've got like 150 different pieces of a bill, not everything will be perfect! But it is quite a big deal for me to see America making these investments...even if I'm not gung-ho on all of them, and some of them legit piss me off...it's an amazing step that I did not think we would be making. - What if a lot of the Cynicism is Unjustified???E65
What if a lot of the Cynicism is Unjustified???What I see more than anything is that, when politicians are more interested in getting people involved in conflict, they become better at creating problems than solving them. On the national level, that's extremely common, and it's becoming more common on the local level. But I think that is /only/ because we are letting the conflict drive us into cynicism. I feel like, as long as the conflict machine (which is very clearly mostly driven by a reactionary right-wing set of fears) is in charge, it's going to get harder and harder and harder to solve even a single problem. - How A YouTube Company Actually Makes MoneyE69
How A YouTube Company Actually Makes MoneyI don't know if you'll be surprised by this, but even though I'm, like, constantly in the weeds of the budget, some things still surprise me when we zoom out...like, specifically that YouTube rev-share is still such a huge part of our business (it used to be like 90% though...so I guess it just feels smaller because it's been shrinking.) Thanks everyone for being a part of what we do!! We try to do it well, even if sometimes we don't know how to do it perfect! - The Kony 2012 of Roads - Solar Freakin' RoadwaysE79
The Kony 2012 of Roads - Solar Freakin' RoadwaysI think we sometimes get stuck thinking that the only worthwhile solutions are the solutions that solve everything all at once. Certainly that's very exciting, and it would be very cool if we could get some of those for, like, transportation and medicine and democracy, but instead, it's mostly a bunch of work of lots of individuals doing small things that ends up making the world better. I get very skeptical when big simple solutions are proposed to me, and I think you should as well. - How Much Does Humanity Weigh?E98
How Much Does Humanity Weigh? For a final twist, all mammals are just 7% of animals, and all animals are LESS THAN ONE PERCENT of the Earth's biomass. We have always and will forever to continue to live in the age of plants, which make up more than 80% of all biomass on earth. - What I Would Have TweetedE104
What I Would Have TweetedI'm feeling much better now. I'm also feeling quite good about not being on Twitter right now. It seems quite messy, and also increasingly not that important...but that's probably how it felt to everyone who wasn't on it. 2023 sure is going to be interesting... - You Cannot Trust Yourself (Hank's End of the Year Worries)E106
You Cannot Trust Yourself (Hank's End of the Year Worries)This video had a whole section in it where I complained about how annoyed I get when I see other people who don't consider their impact get really surprised when people get mad at them and how nice it must be to just be blissfully ignorant and theN I REALIZED THAT'S EXACTLY THE KIND OF THING I'M TALKING ABOUT NOT DOING ANYMORE!!! Amazing. Anyway...I hope everyone has a very very very very good new year! - We're here because were here.E107
We're here because were here.My review of Auld Lang Syne, the New Year's Eve song, accompanying a winter walk through the woods. This is an excerpt from my book The Anthropocene Reviewed. I did this once before in 2020, and may make it a tradition of sorts. Happy New Year. May it be a year that justifies our hope.
