A teenage girl from West Germany is found dead in 1988 Eastern Germany. Although authorities try to hush up the case, a minor police officer reports it to the western police, who send over their best female profiler. The unequal pair has to work together on this obscure case, fighting predjudice, authorities and a killer, who hasn't finished yet.

Police officer Karl Albers doubts that it was an accident, so he marks the cause of death as "undetermined" in the report before sending it to the West. Investigator Nadja Paulitz from the State Office of Criminal Investigation is sent to the East to investigate with him. Karl and his commanding officer, Captain Wieditz, work with Nadja objectively, while district leader Egon Pölz does everything in his power to quickly close the case and be rid of the unwanted visitor from the West as fast as possible. - Die Mädchen und der Tod (2)

But although the case is officially closed, Western German investigator Nadja Paulitz continues to have doubts. The murder of another young woman proves her right - the serial killer is still at large. Captain Wieditz asks Nadja to return to East Germany. She and Karl Albers begin to investigate, racing against the clock, because they know the killer will soon strike again.
