mRNA – Hype or Hope?

mRNA vaccines transport the blueprint for a viral protein into cells, which then begin to produce the foreign biomolecule. The immune system ramps up its defences against the virus, even though it only encounters a small, harmless part of the pathogen. There are high hopes that this mechanism of action will in future allow a wide range of diseases to be treated – among them cancer, HIV, malaria, cardiovascular diseases, and autoimmune conditions.
